Following their most recent claims of FFP violations, Manchester City may be demoted from the Premier League. Here, Daily Star Sport looks at five clubs who have already been kicked out of competitions.
Following a four-year inquiry, the Premier League has accused Manchester City of more than 100 financial violations, placing the club's books under new scrutiny.
Due to potential rule violations between 2009 and 2018, the Premier League has now submitted City to an impartial commission. Despite their denial of any wrongdoing, City might be expelled from the English top division as the harshest penalty if the claims are proven to be true.
Even though that punishment is severe, it does occasionally occur. Here, Trendsbedding examines five teams that got themselves into trouble and were expelled from their respective leagues.
Juventus - Serie A
The Calciopoli scandal shook the football community, and it permanently altered Juventus' destiny because they were the focus of the Italian police investigation.
Juventus' past two scudettos were taken away at the beginning of the 2006–07 season when it was determined that the club had bribed Italian referees to side with the Old Lady. But things got worse, and Juventus was demoted to Serie B.
The Old Lady started the season with -9 points, but they managed to recover right away. The wait for their next conquest of Italy would be four more years.
Rangers - Scottish Premiership
Even though Rangers is one of the largest football teams in the world, financial mismanagement caused the club to go bankrupt in 2012.
In February 2012, the Scottish giants were placed under administration; four months later, they were liquidated. A new club called the Phoenix was founded that summer, but they had to begin in the fourth division, the bottom of the Scottish pyramid.
After a difficult climb back to the top, Steven Gerrard delivered Rangers' first Scottish championship in 2021, and the following year they advanced to the Europa League final.
Steaua Bucharest - Liga I
Steaua Bucharest conquered the mountain in 1986, defeating Barcelona on penalties, and claimed the title of European champions.
Three years later, the Romanian Revolution, however, forced Steaua to break away from the bigger sports club it had been a part of and promote itself as nothing more than a football team. Although there were no immediate consequences, the Ministry of Defence filed a lawsuit against them in 2014 due to the name.
After a three-year legal fight, FC FCSB (the team that had split off) changed its name from Steaua, while the former sports team was allowed to keep its name but had to begin in the fourth division. Both parties emphasize the European victory.
Marseille - Ligue 1
The only French team to date to win the Champions League was Marseille in 1993, but it wasn't free.
Marseille met Valenciennes in Ligue 1 a few days before their historic match with AC Milan, and they needed to win because Lyon and PSG were close behind. Because of this, Bernard Tapie and Jean-Pierre Bernes attempted to buy off a number of Valenciennes' team members.
Unfortunately, one of the guys they tried to bribe came out a few years later, sparking an investigation and Marseille's eventual relegation to 1995. Since being demoted in the middle of the 1990s, Marseille has only once won Ligue 1.
Fiorentina - Serie B
The last time Fiorentina ruled Italy was in 1968, and since then, for one of Italy's seven sisters, things have been everything but smooth.
La Viola recalled their glory years in the 1990s, when Rui Costa and Gabriel Batistuta were their powerful duo. Fiorentina was demoted to Serie B at the turn of the century, nevertheless, as a result of their financial difficulties.
New York Rangers and Fiorentina both went out of business, and Fiorentina Viola was established in 2002 and debuted in Serie C2. La Viola was almost expelled from Serie A for their involvement in Calciopoli before buying back their name and history in the intervening years.
