Men's Basketball loses 14-point quarterfinal to China First gold medal in 17 years since Doha 2006

South Korea's men's basketball team fell short of a medal at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games for the first time in 17 years as they were upset by hosts China.

South Korea, led by head coach Chu Il-seung, fell to host China, 70-84, in the men's basketball quarterfinals at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium on Wednesday at 1 p.m. (ET).

With the loss, South Korea returned home empty-handed for the first time in 17 years since the 2006 Doha Games (fifth place). They were relegated to the fifth through eighth place games.

South Korea won silver at Guangzhou 2010, gold at Incheon 2014 and bronze at Jakarta-Palembang 2018.

Doha was also the second time since Manila 1954 that the country has failed to reach the quarterfinals of a basketball event.

'Doha disaster' followed by 'Hangzhou disaster'.

At the official press conference, Chu said, "First of all, I'm sorry we didn't achieve our goal (of gold). Personally, I think it's a shame, but the players are working hard, and the tournament is not over yet, so we will do our best until the end," he said.

"I'm very sorry to the fans who supported and loved basketball. To repay them, it's my job to reap the beauty of the tournament," he said.

"I think we lost a little bit in terms of height and everything else. The players were a little tight because of the schedule. After the first quarter, our stamina dropped and China took the lead."

South Korea faced China just 14 hours after their quarterfinal match against Bahrain the day before. They had lost their final group game to Japan, who were playing as second stringers, and did not advance to the quarterfinals.

"In many ways, they had every reason to beat us. I think they played well," he said.

South Korea struggled in both the offense and defense. On offense, they struggled with China's fast and strong press, and on defense, they couldn't handle their organic movement.

It's a shame that Moon Sung-gon (KT) and Song Kyo-chang (Sangmu), two of Choo's favorite pieces of forward basketball, are out with injuries. Even so, the team's performance was disastrous.

Regarding the composition of the team, which included a lot of guards, he said, "It's true that we had difficulties with the composition of the team as our tall wingmen went out due to injuries during the preparation process. That's why we played a lot of guards." 스포츠토토맨
