American Military University offers an MBA at a reasonable cost via the internet for professionals seeking an advanced business degree.

Among exclusively online degree programs, American Military University (AMU) is unique. Founded by military professionals to serve military professionals, AMU has set a standard that many other institutions could follow. Offering Associate, Bachelor and Master’s degrees in a wide variety of fields, the university strives to allow its students to earn the degree the student desires instead of having to “settle” for something close. This review covers AMU’s online MBA program offered by distance learning via the internet. AMU has a “civilian” side in American Public University and both are part of the American Public University System located in Charles Town, West Virginia.

Requirements for Online MBA Degree

American Military University’s online MBA program is much like other traditional and online MBA programs. AMU uses the semester hour system and all classes are held online. The MBA consists of 39 semester hours, of which 9 will be in the specialization. Students can elect to pursue a specialization; a general MBA is also available. The MBA program has a core set of 9 courses and each is 3 semester hours. The core courses consist of: Global Management Perspective, Managerial Analysis, Quantitative Analysis, Strategic Management, Legal and Ethical Issues in Management, Applied Decision Making, Managerial Economics, Corporate Finance and Marketing Management.

The various specializations that a student can earn with AMU’s MBA program are: Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Global Business Management, Homeland Security Resource Allocation, Information Technology Management, Marketing and Nonprofit Management. Following completion of the core and specialization courses, the student has a choice of either the course: Business Administration Practicum and Integration Project, or the student can take a set of comprehensive examinations to complete the MBA.

Tuition, Military Discount, Other Costs and Benefits

The tuition rate for AMU compares very favorably to most other online MBA programs. The semester hour cost is $300 per semester hour, which equates to a cost of $11,700 compared to TUI University’s MBA program, which costs $11,000. There are other fees that include a comprehensive final examination fee and a graduation fee, but there is no application fee. All additional fees, in excess of tuition costs, should total no more than $500 for most students. The college does identify course material costs to be between $75 and $150 per course, which would drive the cost up.

Numerous surveys and organizations, including the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), report that the average expected starting annual salary for new professional hires from MBA programs to be in the $80K range in 2006. This makes the price of an MBA a good return on investment (ROI). Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that the average earnings for a person holding a graduate degree, and between the ages of 45 and 54, is about $94,000. It should be noted that these are averages and that in major metropolitan areas the amounts are generally higher.

American Military University does not offer a military discount for any of its programs, but the college does qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Distance learning students will not be entitled to the housing allowance of the Post 9/11 GI Bill because the MBA program is attended online only. For veterans using the Montgomery GI Bill or the Post 9/11 GI Bill, the student will need to take two courses per 8 week term to meet the requirement for full time attendance.

Overall Assessment of American Military University Online MBA Degree

This MBA program has enough breadth to be useful to the professional who needs an MBA to meet the next career milestone. There are enough choices of specializations to meet the needs of most students. It is worth noting that the 8-week terms may be a little intense for some, but it does allow the student to meet the goal in a reasonable period of time. This degree, like many others, appeals to working adults who become online students in order to obtain the necessary academic credentials to advance their career.

Both colleges in the American Public University System (APUS) are regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association, and nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission, Distance Education and Training Council. AMU is one of the few colleges that pursued both national and regional accreditation. Of special note, a MBA or any other graduated degree from AMU meets the requirements to apply for the Presidential Management Fellows program.
